THEFT CRIMES (PENAL CODE §§484, 487, 488)

There are several different forms of theft crimes: Petty theft, Grand Theft, Robbery, auto theft, Embezzlement, and Fraud, along with many different versions of those mentioned. The purpose of this article is to mention just a few of the more common offenses.

PETTY THEFT (SHOPLIFTING)

Also known as larceny, to commit a petty theft one must: (1) take possession of property (worth less than $950) that is not their own (2) take it without permission (3) when they took it they intended to deprive the owner permanently or for a significant amount of time (4) and the property was moved for at least some distance.

GRAND THEFT

The legal definition of grand theft mirrors that of petty theft–only that the value of the property must be larger than $950.
